About These Birds

Dunenspecht

Der Dunenspecht ist der kleinste und am weitesten verbreitete Specht Nordamerikas. Seine geringe Größe erlaubt ihm die Nahrungssuche an dünnen Zweigen und Pflanzenstängeln, die größeren Spechten unzugänglich sind. Im Winter schließt sich der Dunenspecht häufig gemischten Vogelschwärmen an und profitiert von der erhöhten Wachsamkeit mehrerer Arten gegenüber Fressfeinden.

Basstölpel

Der Basstölpel ist ein spektakulärer Sturzflugtaucher, der seine zwei Meter breiten Flügel pfeilförmig anlegt und mit bis zu 100 km/h auf das Wasser trifft. Luftsäcke unter der Haut und ein verstärkter Schädel schützen ihn vor dem Aufprall. Der Bass Rock in Schottland beherbergt über 150.000 Basstölpel – die größte einzelne Kolonie eines Seevogels weltweit.
