Der Jungfernkranich ist die kleinste Kranichart, unternimmt jedoch einen der anstrengendsten Vogelzüge, indem er den Himalaya in Höhen von über 8.000 Metern überquert, um seine Winterquartiere in Indien zu erreichen. Wegen seiner eleganten Erscheinung von Marie-Antoinette benannt, ist er die zweithäufigste Kranichart der Welt.

Quetzal

Der Quetzal galt den Maya und Azteken als göttlich und wurde mit der gefiederten Schlangengottheit Quetzalcoatl in Verbindung gebracht. Sein schillernd grünes Gefieder und die langen Schwanzfedern machen ihn zu einem der schönsten Vögel der Welt. Die Landeswährung Guatemalas ist nach diesem Vogel benannt.
