Er verteidigt sein Nest, indem er Eindringlinge mit übel riechendem Magenöl bespuckt, das die Federn von Fressfeinden verkleben und deren Wasserdichtigkeit zerstören kann – mitunter mit tödlichen Folgen. Der Eissturmvogel hat sein Brutgebiet in den letzten zwei Jahrhunderten drastisch nach Süden ausgedehnt.
