The Eurasian Bittern (Botaurus stellaris) is a large, secretive heron of the family Ardeidae, native to wetlands across the Palearctic from Europe and North Africa east across Asia to Japan and the Russian Far East. Adults are heavily streaked in brown, buff, and black, producing a cryptic pattern that allows perfect concealment in reedbeds.
