Der markante herzförmige Gesichtsschleier der Schleiereule wirkt wie eine Parabolschüssel und leitet den Schall zu den versetzt angeordneten Ohren.
Kernbeißer
Der Kernbeißer besitzt im Verhältnis zu seiner Körpergröße den kräftigsten Schnabel aller europäischen Vögel und kann Kirschkerne knacken, für die eine Kraft von 27 bis 43 kg nötig ist. Trotz seines markanten Erscheinungsbilds ist er bekanntermaßen scheu und schwer zu beobachten. Sein Schädel weist besondere Anpassungen auf, um die enormen beim Kernknacken entstehenden Kräfte abzufedern.
