About These Birds
Flesh-footed Shearwater
41–45 cm, wingspan 99–107 cm. All-dark sooty-brown with pale flesh-coloured feet and yellowish bill base. Breeds southern Indian Ocean islands and SW Australia; ranges to North Pacific. Near Threatened; bycatch concern. Feeds on fish and squid; follows fishing vessels.
Fiji Petrel
30 cm. Small dark petrel; all dark brown with slightly paler chin. Critically Endangered; only one confirmed breeding record from Gau Island, Fiji. Fewer than 50 known sightings total. Possibly nests in highland forest burrows; one of the rarest and least-known petrels.
