A medium-sized partridge (~270 g) of family Phasianidae, with a rich chestnut belly and boldly patterned head. Endemic to the montane forests of Java at 800–3,000 m elevation. Inhabits primary and secondary highland forest. Forages on the forest floor for seeds, berries, and invertebrates.
