The peacock's iridescent blue-green plumage and enormous eye-spotted train — elongated upper tail coverts fanned in display — make the Indian Peafowl unmistakable, while the peahen is brown and cryptically patterned. Omnivorous, it forages on the ground in small groups for seeds, berries, insects, small vertebrates, and cultivated crops. It occupies open forests, farmland, and areas near water across the Indian subcontinent, thriving near human settlements, and lays three to eight eggs in a ground scrape, incubated for 28 to 30 days. Its loud, harsh screaming call carries over great distances, given persistently at dawn and before rain. Native to India, Sri Lanka, and parts of Pakistan and Bangladesh, feral populations are established worldwide. The species is classified as Least Concern.
