Oriental Darter

85–97 cm. Dark brown and black with white streaking; long neck and sharp bill. Resident across South and Southeast Asia to East Africa in freshwater and estuarine habitats. Near Threatened; declining due to wetland loss and hunting. Spears fish underwater; colonial breeder.

Australasian Darter

86–94 cm. Black and dark brown with white wing spots; long snake-like neck; dagger bill. Ranges across Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands in freshwater lakes, rivers, and coastal wetlands. Dives to spear fish; must dry wings after diving. Partially migratory.
