86–94 cm. Black and dark brown with white wing spots; long snake-like neck; dagger bill. Ranges across Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands in freshwater lakes, rivers, and coastal wetlands. Dives to spear fish; must dry wings after diving. Partially migratory.
