About These Birds

Brillenpinguin

Der Brillenpinguin ist die einzige auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent heimische Pinguinart und wird wegen seines eselähnlichen, schreienden Rufs auch Eselspinguin genannt. Sein Bestand ist seit vorindustrieller Zeit durch Eiersammlung, Ölverschmutzungen und die Konkurrenz mit der kommerziellen Fischerei um Sardinen- und Sardellenbestände um über 95 % eingebrochen.

Quetzal

Der Quetzal galt den Maya und Azteken als göttlich und wurde mit der gefiederten Schlangengottheit Quetzalcoatl in Verbindung gebracht. Sein schillernd grünes Gefieder und die langen Schwanzfedern machen ihn zu einem der schönsten Vögel der Welt. Die Landeswährung Guatemalas ist nach diesem Vogel benannt.
