Der Brillenpinguin ist die einzige auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent heimische Pinguinart und wird wegen seines eselähnlichen, schreienden Rufs auch Eselspinguin genannt. Sein Bestand ist seit vorindustrieller Zeit durch Eiersammlung, Ölverschmutzungen und die Konkurrenz mit der kommerziellen Fischerei um Sardinen- und Sardellenbestände um über 95 % eingebrochen.

Die Küstenseeschwalbe hält den Rekord für die längste bekannte Wanderung im Tierreich und legt jährlich rund 70.000 km zwischen Arktis und Antarktis und zurück zurück. Über ihre rund 30 Lebensjahre hinweg fliegt sie damit rechnerisch das Äquivalent von drei Rundreisen zum Mond. Dieser bemerkenswerte Vogel erlebt mehr Tageslicht als jedes andere Lebewesen der Erde.
