The Fasciated Tiger-Heron (Tigrisoma fasciatum) is the smallest and most montane member of the tiger-heron genus Tigrisoma, belonging to the family Ardeidae. Adults show the characteristic tiger-patterned plumage of the genus: finely vermiculated or barred dark brown, gray, and black on the upperparts, neck, and breast, creating intricate cryptic patterning. The throat shows a pale central stripe. Unlike the more widespread Rufescent Tiger-Heron, adults lack the rich rufous-chestnut tones on the head and neck, appearing more uniformly dark and barred overall. Total length is approximately 58–64 cm, making it noticeably smaller than its congeners.
The Fasciated Tiger-Heron is restricted to fast-flowing mountain streams and rivers in the foothills and lower montane zones of the Andes and associated cordilleras. Its range extends from Costa Rica and Panama south through the Andes from Colombia and Venezuela south to northwestern Argentina and Bolivia, generally at elevations between 200 and 1,800 meters. It is strongly associated with rocky, turbulent streams in forested mountains, a more specialized habitat than occupied by the Rufescent Tiger-Heron.
This species is highly adapted to foraging along swiftly flowing, rocky montane streams, where it hunts fish, aquatic insects, crustaceans, and frogs among the rocks and in the calmer eddies along stream margins. It forages in the characteristic tiger-heron manner, standing motionless at the water's edge or on boulders midstream and waiting to strike at passing prey. Its cryptic plumage blends almost perfectly with the lichen-covered rocks and dappled water of its stream habitat.
Breeding biology is poorly documented but presumed to follow the general pattern of the genus: solitary nesting in trees or rock ledges near the stream, a small clutch of one to two eggs, and biparental care. The Fasciated Tiger-Heron is generally shy and difficult to observe, frequently detected only by its loud, resonant calls. It is sedentary and territorial within suitable stream reaches.
The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, but its dependence on intact, fast-flowing montane streams makes it vulnerable to deforestation in watershed catchments, water abstraction, mining pollution, and alteration of stream hydrology.
