35–37 cm. Polymorphic; pale morph pale grey with white underparts; dark morph all brown. Breeds Phoenix and Line Islands, French Polynesia. Ranges widely in tropical Pacific. Near Threatened; introduced predators threaten island colonies. Feeds on squid and fish.
