Barred Tinamou

Restricted to humid lowland forest along the Casiquiare canal region of southern Venezuela and extreme northwestern Brazil. Associated with river-edge and flooded forest at low elevations. Rarely recorded.

Thicket Tinamou

Dry tropical and subtropical forest, scrubland, thickets, and second growth from sea level to 1,500 m, from Mexico through Central America to northwestern Colombia. Tolerates heavily degraded and secondary habitats.

Song & Call Comparison

Barred Tinamou

Song

A slow, hollow whistle from blackwater river forest of the upper Orinoco. Call is distinctive but rarely recorded given its restricted range on the Venezuela-Colombia border.

Thicket Tinamou

Song

A dry, flat whistle repeated monotonously. Call carries through dense thicket and thorn scrub of Central America. Less musical than forest-dwelling Crypturellus relatives.

About These Birds

Barred Tinamou

A small tinamou with distinctly barred brown-and-buff plumage. Restricted to the Casiquiare region of Venezuela and adjacent northwestern Brazil—one of the most restricted tinamou ranges. Nearly all data come from specimens. Inhabits humid lowland forest along river systems.

Thicket Tinamou

A medium-sized tinamou with rich cinnamon-brown plumage, barred wings, and a pale throat. Widespread in dry forest and thickets from Mexico to northern Colombia. Commonly heard calling with a repeated whistle in second-growth scrub and dry forest. Adapts well to degraded habitats.
