The main tail feathers used for steering, braking, and balance during flight.

Retrices typically number 10-16, arranged symmetrically on either side of the tail. They are attached to the pygostyle via strong ligaments and controlled by intrinsic tail muscles. During braking, they fan open to increase drag; during tight turns they act as a rudder. Many species have evolved elongated or ornate retrices for display, as in peacocks and birds-of-paradise.
