A large, impressive Phasianidae spurfowl (~1.12 kg) endemic to the bamboo zone and montane forest edges of Kenya's Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range above 2,500 m. Brown with bold white streaking; red orbital skin. Territorial; forages on roots, seeds, and invertebrates. Least Concern in protected montane forests.

Large; dark brown above with pale buff shaft streaks; whitish below with dense dark brown streaking; red bill; red facial skin; red legs; no bare neck. Sexes similar; restricted to Kenyan and Ugandan highlands.
