# Photographing Birds in Flight
Birds in flight -- often abbreviated BIF in photography circles -- represent the ultimate challenge and reward in bird photography. A perfectly captured image of a bird in flight, wings spread, sharp against a clean sky, is among the most dramatic subjects in nature photography.
## Why Flight Photography Is Difficult
Flight photography combines every technical challenge simultaneously. The subject is moving fast, at variable distance, requiring continuous refocusing. The margin for error is razor-thin. Do not be discouraged by a low success rate when starting out. Even experienced flight photographers may keep only 5 to 10 percent of their images.
## Camera Settings for BIF
Use the fastest shutter speed your lighting allows -- 1/2500 second is a good starting point, and 1/4000 second is preferred for fast-flapping species. Set your aperture one stop narrower than maximum to gain a slightly deeper focus zone. Use continuous autofocus with your camera's most advanced tracking mode. Set your drive mode to high-speed continuous shooting.

Successful flight photography depends on smooth, fluid tracking. Follow the bird with your lens, matching its speed and direction. Start tracking before the bird enters your desired shooting zone. Continue tracking through and after the burst -- stopping abruptly will produce blurred final frames.
