Mobbing

Mobbing involves alarm calls that recruit other species, creating mixed-species groups that persistently follow and harass owls, hawks, or nest predators. The calls are often structurally similar across species, facilitating cross-species coordination. Mobbing behavior is partly learned — young birds observe adults and acquire the appropriate targets. While risky for individuals, it benefits the community by discouraging predators from establishing territories near nesting colonies.
