Incubation temperatures are tightly regulated — most species maintain eggs between 37-38 °C. Brood patches (defeathered, vascularized abdominal skin) develop under hormonal control (prolactin and progesterone) and transfer body heat directly to eggs. Megapodes are the only birds that do not incubate eggs with their own body heat, instead using solar radiation, geothermal heat, or fermentation heat from mound material to incubate. Incubation period length correlates with adult body size and developmental mode (altricial vs. precocial).
