About These Birds

Stewart Island Shag

68 cm. Black and white pied shag; dark forms also occur; orange caruncles. Endemic to Stewart Island and southern South Island coast, New Zealand. Vulnerable; feeds on fish in cold coastal waters. Colonial nester on cliff ledges; closely related to other New Zealand endemic shags.

Chatham Islands Shag

63 cm. Black and white; orange-red caruncles at bill base. Endemic to Chatham Islands, New Zealand. Critically Endangered; total population fewer than 1,000 birds. Restricted to a few Chatham Islands colonies; feeds on fish and invertebrates in surrounding coastal waters.
