Rough-faced Shag
65–70 cm. Black above; white below; prominent orange-red facial caruncles. Endemic to Cook Strait area, New Zealand. Vulnerable; small fragmented population. Feeds on fish and invertebrates in coastal waters. Colonial nester on cliff ledges; distinct from other New Zealand shags.
Brandt's Cormorant
84–89 cm. Large; glossy dark green with blue throat pouch; white face plumes in breeding. Breeds along Pacific coast of North America from Alaska to Baja California. Feeds on fish in kelp beds and rocky shores; plunge-dives and pursues fish underwater. Colonial rooster on sea cliffs.
