About These Birds

Antarctic Shag

63–72 cm. Black above; white below; caruncles reduced compared to related shags. Breeds on the Antarctic Peninsula and associated islands. Feeds on fish in cold Antarctic coastal waters. One of the southernmost-breeding cormorants; largely sedentary around breeding colonies.

Cape Cormorant

63 cm. All-black with glossy blue-green; bare orange facial skin. Breeds colonially on South African and Namibian islands. Endangered; severe decline due to competition with purse-seine anchovy fisheries and El Niño events. Feeds on anchovy and sardine in Benguela Current.
