Inhabits open woodland, paddocks, parks, and golf courses across mainland Australia. Adapted to suburban environments; nests on open ground.

Indian Thick-knee (Burhinus indicus) is a medium 38–41 cm stone-curlew of South Asia. Similar to Eurasian Thick-knee but with scaly upperpart pattern; yellow eye. Inhabits dry rocky and sandy riverbeds, scrub, and open country across the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka. Resident; non-migratory. Crepuscular; feeds on invertebrates.
