Painted Buttonquail (Turnix varius) is the most colorful Australian buttonquail at 17–19 cm. Female: boldly patterned with chestnut shoulders, red eye, and black and grey markings. Inhabits open dry sclerophyll forest and woodland with grassy understory in eastern and south-western Australia. Forages by spinning in leaf litter.
