Small and restless, the Bananaquit (Coereba flaveola) ranges across the Caribbean and into parts of Central and South America, where it is among the most widespread and adaptable birds of the region. It is placed in the tanager family, Thraupidae. The decurved bill is its working tool: rather than entering a blossom from the front, the bird pierces the base of the flower to reach nectar directly. Recorded birds weigh about 10 g with a wingspan near 11 cm. Two to four eggs are incubated for 12-13 days, and the young fledge after a further 17-19. The IUCN Red List rates the species Least Concern.
