关于
The Boat-billed Heron (Cochlearius cochlearius) is one of the most morphologically distinctive members of the family Ardeidae, so unusual in appearance that it was formerly placed in its own monotypic family, Cochleariidae. The feature that immediately sets this species apart is its extraordinarily broad, flat, scoop-shaped bill, which is wider than it is long and resembles an upturned boat hull — a structure unlike any other heron bill. Adults have a black cap and crest, pale gray to white breast and face, chestnut flanks, and dark gray to black upperparts. The large dark eyes are adapted for nocturnal vision. Total length is 48–53 cm.
The Boat-billed Heron inhabits mangroves, forested stream and river margins, swampy forest, and dense vegetation along the edges of tropical and subtropical wetlands in Central and South America. Its range extends from Mexico south through Central America and across most of tropical South America east of the Andes to Bolivia, Brazil, and northern Argentina. It is most closely associated with mangrove systems and forested watercourses at low elevations.
This species is nocturnal and crepuscular, roosting in trees during the day and becoming active at dusk. It forages in shallow water along stream margins, mudflats, and at the edges of mangrove channels. The enormous broad bill is thought to function as a tactile sensory organ, sweeping through shallow water to detect small fish, shrimp, frogs, large insects, and other invertebrates by touch in darkness. Molecular and behavioral studies confirm it as a specialized heron rather than a genuinely separate family.
The Boat-billed Heron nests colonially in trees and dense shrubs near water, often in small groups. The nest is a platform of sticks. Clutches contain two to four pale blue-green eggs with brown spots, incubated by both parents. The species roosts in groups during the day, and communal roost sites may be used year after year. It is generally quiet during the day but can produce loud rattling calls at night.
The species is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN. It is relatively tolerant of modified habitats and occurs in secondary forests and disturbed areas as long as access to water with suitable prey is maintained. Deforestation and mangrove loss remain the primary threats to local populations.
