Amami Woodcock
Amami Woodcock: 34–36 cm, large rufous woodcock endemic to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan (Amami-Oshima, Tokunoshima). Inhabits dense subtropical forest. Nocturnal; probes soil for earthworms. NT. Threatened by feral mongooses introduced for snake control and habitat loss. Sedentary island endemic. Similar to Eurasian Woodcock.
Wilson's Phalarope
Wilson's Phalarope: 22–24 cm, largest phalarope with a very thin bill; females bright with rufous neck-stripe in breeding plumage. Breeds on prairie wetlands of western North America; migrates to saline and alkaline lakes of South America. Spins on water to stir up invertebrates. Females leave males to incubate. Polyandrous. Long-distance migrant.
