About These Birds

Jamaican Petrel

36 cm. Dark sooty-brown throughout with slightly paler underparts. Possibly Critically Endangered or extinct; last confirmed sighting 1879 in Jamaica. Likely nested in Blue Mountains. If surviving, threatened by mongoose predation and habitat loss; only occasional sight records at sea.

Atlantic Petrel

43 cm, wingspan 104 cm. Large; dark brown above with pale belly and dusky breast-band creating hooded appearance. Breeds Tristan da Cunha and Gough Island; ranges into south Atlantic and Indian Ocean. Endangered; threatened by introduced predators and longline fisheries.
