About These Birds
Horned Grebe
Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus) is a medium 31–38 cm grebe of the Holarctic. Breeding: black and chestnut body with golden-buff 'horn' tufts on sides of head; red neck. Winters grey and white on coastal seas. Breeds on ponds and lakes in boreal and temperate zones; migratory. Wingspan to 65 cm. Vulnerable in Europe due to lake eutrophication.
Least Grebe
Least Grebe (Tachybaptus dominicus) is the smallest New World grebe at 21–27 cm. Dark grey overall in breeding plumage with yellow eye, blackish cap, and short bill. Inhabits small freshwater ponds, ditches, and marshes from the southern USA through Central and South America to northern Argentina. Feeds on small fish and aquatic invertebrates.
