About These Birds

South Georgia Diving-petrel

20 cm. Tiny; dark above, white below; paler scapular edges. Breeds South Georgia, Kerguelen, and Heard Island. Extremely abundant; possibly billions of individuals in Southern Ocean. Feeds on euphausiids by diving; sympatric with Common Diving-petrel but smaller with narrower bill.

Atlantic Petrel

43 cm, wingspan 104 cm. Large; dark brown above with pale belly and dusky breast-band creating hooded appearance. Breeds Tristan da Cunha and Gough Island; ranges into south Atlantic and Indian Ocean. Endangered; threatened by introduced predators and longline fisheries.
