About These Birds

Small ground dove, 19–22 cm, with warm brown upperparts, a pale grey head, and whitish underparts. Shy and retiring, inhabiting dense lowland forest on Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga. Terrestrial forager of seeds and small fruits. Vulnerable due to forest loss and introduced predators on Pacific islands.

Red-moustached Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus mercierii), 27 cm. Green with a red moustachial streak and orange underparts; endemic to the Marquesas Islands. Last confirmed on Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa. Possibly Extinct; last reliably recorded in the 1970s. Threatened by introduced rats and cats.
