About These Birds

Franklin's Gull

Franklin's Gull, 32–36 cm, makes one of the longest overland migrations of any gull, breeding on prairie marshes of North America and wintering on Pacific coasts of South America — a journey of 12,000+ km. Rosy-flushed underparts in spring; black hood with distinctive white eye-crescents. Insectivore.

Andean Gull

Andean Gull, 45–48 cm, breeds at high-altitude Andean lakes from Colombia to Argentina, typically above 3000 m. Black hood in breeding plumage; white below with grey mantle. Largely insectivore, following cattle or foraging at lake edges. Partial altitudinal migrant descending to Pacific and Atlantic coasts in winter.
