Madagascar Snipe
Madagascar Snipe: 27–29 cm, large-footed snipe endemic to Madagascar. Inhabits marshes, rice paddies, and wet grassland mainly in the north and west. NT. Cryptic brown and buff streaking. Probes soft ground for invertebrates. Sedentary endemic. Threatened by wetland drainage and hunting pressure.
Amami Woodcock
Amami Woodcock: 34–36 cm, large rufous woodcock endemic to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan (Amami-Oshima, Tokunoshima). Inhabits dense subtropical forest. Nocturnal; probes soil for earthworms. NT. Threatened by feral mongooses introduced for snake control and habitat loss. Sedentary island endemic. Similar to Eurasian Woodcock.
