About These Birds
Flesh-footed Shearwater
41–45 cm, wingspan 99–107 cm. All-dark sooty-brown with pale flesh-coloured feet and yellowish bill base. Breeds southern Indian Ocean islands and SW Australia; ranges to North Pacific. Near Threatened; bycatch concern. Feeds on fish and squid; follows fishing vessels.
Large Saint Helena Petrel
Extinct; known only from subfossil bones found on St. Helena. Medium-large petrel that went extinct within the last few centuries, likely due to human settlement, habitat destruction, and introduced predators. Related to living Pterodroma species; part of the endemic St. Helena avifauna.
