About These Birds
Asian Openbill
68–81 cm. White plumage with black flight feathers; same gaping bill as African Openbill. Resident across South and Southeast Asia in wetlands, paddy fields, and river floodplains. Feeds primarily on apple snails; colonial nester in trees. Often seen in large flocks near agricultural land.
Oriental Stork
The oriental stork is one of the most endangered stork species, with fewer than 3,000 individuals remaining in the wild. It was once widespread across East Asia but declined dramatically due to wetland drainage and pesticide use. Reintroduction programs in Japan and Korea have achieved notable success.
