Jamaica holds the entire world population of the Ring-tailed Pigeon (Patagioenas caribaea), a large columbid of 38-42 cm confined to the forested Blue Mountains and John Crow Mountains. Dark slate-grey overall, it takes its name from the broad pale band across the tail, which combines with a paler head to identify the bird at a distance. It feeds on forest fruits and berries. Recorded birds average about 250 g with a wingspan near 42 cm. A range this narrow leaves the species exposed: continuing deforestation and hunting pressure underpin its Vulnerable listing on the IUCN Red List.
