The Blackish Chat-tyrant is a small, compact flycatcher with almost uniformly dark slaty-blackish plumage, a pale eye ring, and slightly paler underparts. It inhabits wet cloud forest, forest edges, and shrubby páramo in the Andes from Colombia south to Bolivia, typically at elevations between 2,000 and 3,500 meters. It perches low, sallying to the ground or hovering to catch small insects.
