Tanım
An irregular mass movement of birds outside their normal range, usually driven by food shortages.
Ayrıntılı Açıklama
Irruptions are most familiar in boreal and Arctic seed-eaters and predators: crossbills irrupt when conifer cone crops fail; snowy owls irrupt south in winters when lemming populations collapse. Irruptions differ from regular migration in being unpredictable in timing, scale, and destination. They are driven by boom-bust cycles in food availability rather than photoperiod, and the birds involved are often first-year individuals that failed to secure territories in the breeding range.
