Brood

Tanım

The group of chicks hatched from a single clutch and raised together.

Ayrıntılı Açıklama

Brood size at hatching often differs from clutch size due to hatching failure (infertile eggs, addled eggs, predation). In asynchronous hatchers like eagles, size hierarchies develop among siblings, and the smallest nestling frequently starves — a facultative brood reduction strategy that allows parents to match investment to food availability. Brood-reduction behaviors evolved independently in numerous species as a mechanism for flexible investment under variable food conditions.
