About These Birds

Short-tailed Albatross

Short-tailed Albatross, 84–94 cm, wingspan 215–230 cm, was hunted nearly to extinction for feathers in the early 20th century. Now recovering (≈5,000 individuals) from a single colony on Torishima, Japan. White body with golden head, pink bill. Pelagic across North Pacific; Vulnerable but population growing.

Campbell Albatross

Campbell Albatross, 88 cm, wingspan 220 cm, breeds only on Campbell Island south of New Zealand. Very similar to Black-browed Albatross; distinguished by a pale yellow iris (Black-browed has dark iris). Pelagic across the South Pacific. Near Threatened; affected by longline bycatch.
