About These Birds

Peruvian Diving-petrel

22–24 cm. Small, stocky diving seabird; dark above, white below. Breeds coastal Peru and Chile; non-migratory. Uses wings to 'fly' underwater like alcids; feeds on anchovy and krill in the Humboldt Current. Endangered; highly vulnerable to El Niño events and guano harvesting disturbance.

Balearic Shearwater

30–38 cm. Brown above; variably dirty-white to brown below; often shows brown smudging on flanks. Breeds only Balearic Islands, Spain. Critically Endangered with fewer than 3,000 pairs; faces extinction. Migrates to NE Atlantic; threatened by predators, fishing bycatch, and tourist development.
