About These Birds
Monteiro's Storm-petrel
Monteiro's Storm-petrel, 19–21 cm, breeds exclusively on Graciosa Island in the Azores, wintering in the central North Atlantic. Recently split from Band-rumped Storm-petrel; breeds in a different season (July–November vs March–April for Castro's). Near Threatened; very small island-restricted population.
European Storm-petrel
European Storm-petrel, 14–18 cm, wingspan 36–39 cm, is the smallest seabird in European waters, breeding in burrows and rock crevices on Atlantic islands from Iceland to the Mediterranean. Entirely sooty black with white rump. Strictly nocturnal at colonies. Planktivore; patters over wave surface picking up oil and plankton.
