About These Birds
New Britain Bronzewing
Medium-large terrestrial pigeon, 30–33 cm, similar to New Guinea Bronzewing but with a white head (not just forehead). Confined to lowland forests of New Britain in the Bismarck Archipelago. Feeds on seeds and fallen fruits on the forest floor. Least Concern.
Western Ornate Fruit-dove
Western Ornate Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus ornatus), 20 cm. Multicoloured: green back, lilac crown, orange breast patch and yellow belly. Found in New Guinea's western lowland forests. Frugivore. Least Concern; occurs throughout lowland New Guinea but poorly studied compared to eastern counterparts.
