About These Birds

Sulawesi Ground Dove

Large ground dove, 30–35 cm, with brown and grey plumage, a white forehead, and three dark spots on the white breast suggesting a 'triple wound.' Endemic to Sulawesi and adjacent Togian and Banggai Islands. Inhabits lowland and hill forest floor. Granivore and frugivore. Vulnerable due to deforestation.

African Collared-dove

Small dove, 26–29 cm, pale pinkish-grey with a black hindneck collar and white tail corners. Native to arid zones of sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to Somalia and south to Tanzania. The ancestor of the domesticated Barbary Dove (ring-necked dove). Granivore of grass seeds and small grains in dry savanna, farmland, and desert edge. Least Concern.
