About These Birds

Red-kneed Dotterel

Red-kneed Dotterel: 17–19 cm, Australian plover with a black head and breast-band, white throat-patch, and diagnostic red-orange knees contrasting with pale legs. Inhabits freshwater wetland margins including flooded grassland, mudflats, and rice fields across Australia and New Guinea. Feeds on invertebrates. Nomadic, following rainfall.

Southern Lapwing

Southern Lapwing: 32–38 cm, the most familiar South American lapwing with a grey head, pinkish-grey upperparts, metallic green wing spurs, and a distinctive crest. Common resident from Colombia south to Patagonia in open grassland, farmland, and urban parks. Insectivorous. Highly vocal and territorial. Expanding its range northward.
