Black-fronted Tern
Black-fronted Tern, 27–30 cm, is Endemic and Near Threatened, breeding on South Island New Zealand river shingle beds. Orange bill, blue-grey body, black cap; juveniles brownish. Piscivore and insectivore; hovers and dips over braided rivers. Winters on nearby North Island and Australian coasts.
Aleutian Tern
Aleutian Tern, 32–34 cm, breeds colonially in Alaska and Russian Far East, wintering in Southeast Asian waters — one of the most poorly tracked migrations among seabirds. Dark grey above, white below, black cap with white forehead. Piscivore; dives for small fish. Near Threatened.
