About These Birds
Streaked Shearwater
48 cm, wingspan 122 cm. Large shearwater; brown-streaked white head and neck; brown above, white below. Breeds Japan and islands of East Asia; migrates south to Australia and Indian Ocean. Feeds on fish and squid; forms large flocks; the most abundant shearwater in NW Pacific.
Balearic Shearwater
30–38 cm. Brown above; variably dirty-white to brown below; often shows brown smudging on flanks. Breeds only Balearic Islands, Spain. Critically Endangered with fewer than 3,000 pairs; faces extinction. Migrates to NE Atlantic; threatened by predators, fishing bycatch, and tourist development.
