About These Birds
Flesh-footed Shearwater
41–45 cm, wingspan 99–107 cm. All-dark sooty-brown with pale flesh-coloured feet and yellowish bill base. Breeds southern Indian Ocean islands and SW Australia; ranges to North Pacific. Near Threatened; bycatch concern. Feeds on fish and squid; follows fishing vessels.
Peruvian Diving-petrel
22–24 cm. Small, stocky diving seabird; dark above, white below. Breeds coastal Peru and Chile; non-migratory. Uses wings to 'fly' underwater like alcids; feeds on anchovy and krill in the Humboldt Current. Endangered; highly vulnerable to El Niño events and guano harvesting disturbance.
