About These Birds

Australian Brushturkey

A large megapode (~2.4 kg) of family Megapodiidae, with bare red head, yellow wattle, and dark body. Inhabits rainforests and scrublands of eastern Australia. Males construct massive compost mounds of leaf litter to incubate eggs using fermentation heat, adjusting mound size to regulate temperature. Omnivorous. Least Concern; increasingly adapting to suburban gardens.

Yellow-legged Brushturkey

A medium-large megapode (~1.3 kg) of family Megapodiidae, identifiable by yellow legs and a dark bill. Inhabits lowland rainforests of southern New Guinea. Like other brushturkeys, it is a mound-builder that uses decomposing vegetation to incubate eggs. Feeds on fruits and invertebrates on the forest floor. Least Concern; relatively poorly studied species.
